How Do You Maintain A Successful eCommerce Blog?

11 January 2016 12:54

It may seem a bit strange for a website which is devoted to selling products to be concerned with maintaining a blog. However, research from Hubspot shows some revealing correlations between the volume of blog posts on a website and their other website statistics, indicating that blogging has a few very attractive long term benefits for eCommerce stores:

- An increased volume of blog posts is correlated with increased website traffic

- Websites with more than 15 blog posts per month get 5X more traffic than companies that don't blog at all, with even larger benefits being seen by B2B companies

- Small businesses (1-10 employees) tend to see the largest increases in traffic when they publish more posts.

Although statistics can always lie, it seems there must be some value in committing to maintaining an eCommerce blog.

How Do You Maintain A Successful Blog?

The secret of a successful blog lies in knowing your customer and committing to regularly produce relavent content for them.

1. Know your customer

This may sound basic but it is worth spending time listing everything you know about your typical customer. What gender are they? What do they like? What are their interests? What age are they? The better you know your customer, the more effectively you will be able to tailor your blog to them.

2. Come up with ideas for relavent content

Once you've profiled your customer, it's then a case of providing relevant content for them. It can seem daunting but by setting aside time with your team to brainstorm useful subjects for your customers, you can come up with a lot of ideas for content very quickly. These can be directly related to your services, or sometimes simply topics which may interest your customer.

3. Plan & schedule in your blog posts

Once you have your blog topics, you then need to schedule these in. Be realistic in your planning and clearly define who is going to publish articles on particular dates. We would recommend only planning a few months in advance.
